Apple iPhone Ultra: My First Look Review

Apple iPhone Ultra: My First Look Review

Alright, so based on all the digging I’ve done on the iPhone Ultra, Apple’s first foldable phone, I want to share everything I know so far from the specs, rumors, and leaks.

Honestly, after like seven or eight years of Samsung and everyone else making foldables, Apple has finally decided to jump on the bandwagon. Word on the street is they’re going to unveil this bad boy in the near future. Until it’s officially announced, I’m going to keep updating all the leaked and rumored specs every single day so you can get an accurate picture of what’s coming.

Design

Judging by the renders I’ve seen, the design really isn’t that pretty, and the aspect ratio is just bizarre. Rumor has it that when it’s closed, the cover screen is going to have a weird 4:3 aspect ratio.

The iPhone Ultra is around 120mm tall, which is about 12 centimeters. That makes it roughly four centimeters shorter than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. When you unfold it, the width is around 167mm, meaning it’s almost 15mm wider than the Z Fold 7. This basically confirms the rumors that Apple’s going for a much wider design.

As for how thin it is, it measures 4.7mm when unfolded. Compared to the 4.2mm thickness of the Z Fold 7, the iPhone Ultra is about 0.5mm thicker.

On the back, there’s an oval-shaped camera island housing two camera sensors. This design looks quite a bit like last year’s iPhone, especially the iPhone Air. Honestly, the whole wide vibe of this phone really reminds me of the Pura X Max that Huawei dropped this year.

Then again, it feels like this year’s foldable trend is moving toward wider, more practical screens anyway. I even heard Samsung’s planning to release a widescreen version of the Z Fold.

Apple iPhone Ultra colors in Black and White

As for color options, Apple is going to release this phone in neutral colors like black, white, and silver. It makes total sense because when a phone carries a price tag over $2000, nobody spending that kind of cash wants bright, loud colors like orange or yellow.

Display

A render of the foldable iPhone Ultra in matte black shows a horizontal dual-camera module and a cover display.

The cover screen on the iPhone Ultra is only 5.5 inches, which feels super cramped to me. It’s basically the size of an old iPhone 8 Plus. When you stack that up against the 6.5-inch outer display on the Samsung Z Fold 7, you realize this 5.5-inch screen might actually make the cover display a bit impractical.

Apple iPhone Ultra Main Display

But the main inner screen is a whole different story. The leaked data shows the main display is 7.8 inches. That’s a pretty normal size and only a tiny bit smaller than the Z Fold 7. This screen’s about 0.5 inches smaller than an iPad mini, which basically means you’re killing two birds with one stone. You get an iPhone and an iPad mini that fits right in your pocket.

Hardware & OS

Apple's logo sits next to the letter A and a question mark on the matte metallic body, hinting at the iPhone Ultra's potential chipset.

If the Apple A20 chipset is not introduced by then, we’re going to see the A19 Pro chip on the iPhone Ultra just like the iPhone 17 lineup, which is a high-profile beast of a processor.

I just hope Apple doesn’t skimp here and put in a watered-down version with fewer processing cores like they did with the iPhone Air. Still, no matter how powerful it is, it probably won’t beat the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5.

iOS 27 logo

The operating system of this phone is also supposed to ship with iOS 27, packed with new AI features. Of course, I’ll believe it when I see it. Despite all the hype, I still think Apple’s lagging behind Samsung and Google in the AI department, even though Google has collaborated with them and probably wants to help them level up.

Camera

Apple iPhone Ultra Camera

Look, no foldable phone is ever meant to be a dedicated camera phone, and from what I can gather from the leaked iPhone Ultra specs, we’re looking at a pretty familiar camera setup.

The main wide camera’s the same 48MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and 1/1.28-inch sensor size that we saw on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, so the quality will be solid. The ultrawide’s also a 48MP sensor.

The real shocker here is that you shouldn’t expect any crazy optical zoom because the telephoto lens is completely gone. Overall, it’s not a camera powerhouse. It’s more of a flex phone, meant for showing off and taking mirror selfies in cafes.

Instead, it has a good selfie camera. It’s a new 18MP sensor with Center Stage support, and I’m a huge fan of that. The coolest feature is that even when you’re holding your phone vertically, you can still shoot photos and videos horizontally.

Battery

Some famous tech sites are claiming the iPhone Ultra will have a 5500mAh battery, but I’m calling BS on that.

The reason’s pretty obvious. Samsung foldables, the Z series, always have smaller batteries than the S series, coming in at 4400mAh.

Apple’s biggest achievement to date was squeezing a 5088mAh battery into the eSIM version of the iPhone 17 Pro Max. How on earth are they going to fit a 5500mAh battery into a foldable phone that’s only 4.7mm thin when open?

So, that’s definitely just a rumor. They’ll probably put a 4300 or 4400mAh battery in there and then market the heck out of how amazing it is.

Price & Release Date

According to the rumors, the iPhone Ultra’s going to set you back over $2000. That number makes sense. The Samsung Z Fold 7 is already $1900, so being $200 pricier feels pretty normal for Apple since their phones are always overpriced anyway.

As for the release date, a lot of big tech sites think it will be released in early September alongside the iPhone 18 series. Others think Apple might hold a separate event earlier, but I think the first theory’s more likely. It’ll probably debut at the main September event with the rest of the iPhones to give the fans a massive surprise.
